about
By turns brash and brooding, 'The Introspect' is the first "official" single from Manchester amalgamation Bite Marcus, released 6 December 2023.
It's like early Scott Walker, if Scott was a Depeche Mode fan born 20 (or 60) years later. Horns crash into synths, drums groove their way under pickaxe noises, and Bite Marcus’s commanding baritone directs it all from above. It’s a dark-wave banger that undoubtedly heralds an inspired new presence in British alternative music...
...although he's not that new. He ran the gamut with Brighton-post-punk-4-piece grasshopper from 2012 - 2020 - and now he's also struck gold alone. Simultaneously more dramatic and less-dramatic than grasshopper's debut album 'Scuttle', it shows a songwriter finally arriving at the controls of his own mixing desk, instruments, and product.
lyrics
Lyrics:
Water birth—floating out into the world
unbreathing, until I heard my mum’s heartbeat.
A miracle, or so she says—as for me I can’t recall
those early days/the unborn state, no matter
how long I spend
digging past the mantle and into the meat—
tracing my roots back to their seeds—
going once more unto the breech—
a germ, a spark.
What made me turn into someone
capable of introspection? What made me
reach into those lungs, breathe, and sing—
I am alive and kicking,
yeah, I have finally arrived.
Slightly late and back to front, born under an Aries sun,
living where the world meets flesh, bound to this experience—
oh I am, I am home.
So it goes. Life can be unbearable.
Learning to cope only comes about the hard way—
shedding skin, setting bones, forehead against bus windows,
and there behind my beating heart, the instinct
that keeps me breathing in—
I am alive and kicking
yeah I have started to thrive.
Slightly late and back to front, definitely my parents’ son,
living where the world meets flesh, bent experience—
oh I am, I am home.
digging past the mantle and into the meat—
tracing my roots back to their seeds—
going once more unto the breech—
digging past the mantle and into the meat.
