Lyrics:
We open on the city, tempting as a trap—
cracks in the foundations and people in those cracks.
A spider has a web like a landlord has two flats—
one is only natural, the other one is not.
Franz Kafka appeared to me and said that in his wildest dreams
he couldn’t hold a candle to Maggie (not that she needs the extra heat).
Franz Kafka came in his sleep, and realised all his wettest dreams
were becoming neoliberal fantasies— “there’s no such thing as society”.
Communities are left to rot, see who stands to profit most—
I don’t believe that it’s right, so why should I accept it?
When there’s bricks and willing hands, what’s to stop us taking charge,
giving everyone a chance, a decent shot at living?
Moving through the city, as mice about the house—
wandering the streets under billboard eyes.
Somewhere in the background, high above our heads,
boardrooms boom with the laughs of selfish men.
Goldfinger (with his Midas touch) turned his son into a news empire,
took to wearing custom gloves with a finger always pointing at someone else’s head.
Curiosity (proverbial cat) did some digging and unearthed the facts:
Goldfinger doesn’t pay his tax and hides his hands in a political party.
Communities are left to rot, see who stands to profit most—
I don’t believe that it’s fair, so why should I accept it?
When there’s bricks and willing hands, what’s to stop us taking charge,
building up a better land, a world that we can live in?
A world that we can live in.
A world that we can live in.
A world that we can live in.
There’s no such thing as society—
there’s no such thing as society—
neoliberal fantasies—
there’s no such thing as society.
